INGHAM COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS

RESOLUTION HONORING J.W. SEXTON

RESOLUTION #03-145

WHEREAS, in the pursuit of education, the Lansing Board of Education sought to build a facility that would enhance and address the educational needs of the students in Lansing; and

WHEREAS, in 1943, a new building was opened on the west side of Lansing, in the midst of World War II; and

WHEREAS, the school was eventually named after then Superintendent of Schools Jay Wesley Sexton, and became a pillar of educational excellence in the Lansing community; and

WHEREAS, J.W. Sexton, as it has become affectionately known, has graduated highly educated members of the community, such as Dr. Alfred Hershey, who was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969, and current Mayor of the City of Lansing, Antonio Benavides; and

WHEREAS, J.W. Sexton offers a wide range of extracurricular activities for students, such as National Honor Society, Key Club, National Art Honor Society, and is also known for its outstanding Fine Arts Programs within the Lansing community.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the members of the Ingham County Board of Commissioners hereby join in the celebration of J.W. Sexton's fine accomplishments and 60 years of educational excellence in the Lansing community.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board extends its sincere appreciate and gratitude to the teaching staff and administration of J.W. Sexton for their many contributions to the students and the citizens of Ingham County.
